Gold or silver? Learn which looks better on you

You want to invest in some jewelry. But you're wondering whether gold or silver fits you best.

Let's tackle this with the most important question first; do you prefer gold or silver?

Maybe you have an aesthetic preference. But if you want to buy what looks best on you, you may want to do some analysis of your color type to see which material would enhance your natural beauty most.

This blog article uses principles from the seasonal color analysis to help you figure out which color type you are and whether gold or silver jewelry suits you better.

Finding your best match with the seasonal color analysis

You can find out whether gold or silver looks better on you using the seasonal color analysis. The seasonal color analysis is a helpful tool to determine what kind of colors work for you. It takes into consideration your overall coloring. This is made up of your skin undertone, your hair color and your eye color. It divides people into 4 categories based on the seasons' typical colors.

The difference between warm and cold color types

People with a warm color type have a yellow undertone in their skin. Their hair may have a gold, bronze or copper glow. Their eyes colors may be a rich hazel or have golden speckles in the iris. If 2 or 3 of the elements (skin, hair, eyes) can be determined as warm, they are most likely a warm color type.

Here you can see an example. She has blonde hair with warm, golden undertones. She has hazel brown eyes and a warm skin tone that tans easily (another clue!).

On the other hand, cool color types will have a cool or bluish undertone to their hair, skin, and eyes. Their complexion or skin tone may be more olive or have blue undertones. Their color may range from muted blonde to ashy brown, or deep black. They can have grey, bright green, blue, deep brown or black eyes.

Gold vs. Silver on the different color types

When looking at clothes and jewelry, it's all about harmony. The warm Spring and Fall types look better with warm colors. So colors with more yellow tones, like olive green or rust. Therefore, gold looks better on them. Silver can wash them out and make them look a bit tired.

The cooler color types Summer and Winter types look better with cool colors that have a blue undertone glow, such as grey and lilac. Silver enhances their features rather than gold, which might highlight redness in their face.

How to determine your color type?

1. Determine the undertone of your skin

Is it warm or cool?

Blue veins usually indicate a cool undertone. Green veins indicate a warmer undertone.

If this is not clear, you can also play around with clothes. Do pure white or grey shirts look better on you? Then you probably have a cool undertone. Off-white or beige shirts look better on warm undertones.

Alternatively, you can also hold a piece of white paper against your face. If your face appears pink or blue, you have a cool undertone. If you look more yellow, you're warm. The Spring and Fall types are also more likely to get freckles in summer.

Still not sure? You may have a neutral undertone. Here is a great guide to get more in-depth.

2. Consider your natural hair color

Grey, ash blonde and brown hair are more cold-type features. Rich hair colors (golden blonde, red, chestnut brown) often have an underlying warm pigment, such as gold, red, orange or yellow.

When you're not sure, there are some clues you can use. The cold Winter types often have a big contrast between their hair and skin color. The warm Spring and Fall types often get golden or blonde highlights in summer, whereas the cold Summer type may get sun-bleached ends in their season.

Do you have grey hair? Don't worry, that doesn't change your type. You can apply the same analysis to your previous hair color. But you can also look at your hair now to see if it has more warm or cool tones.

3. Take a look at your eyes

Where hair color and tan may change throughout the years and seasons, your eyes will always stay the same. So this is a reliable way of determining your coloring. See if they have more characteristics of the warm or cool type.
